Australia’s Organic Dairy Farmers (ODF) Co-operative has showcased their premium quality organic milk by partnering with one of Australia’s best cheese makers to develop an Alpine-style cheese. Fifth generation dairy farmer, John Smith, attributes the quality of his organic milk to the lush pasture that his Jersey herd grazes on and a holistic approach to their health. Just down the Great Ocean Road, cheese maker Matthieu Megard uses Smith’s milk to create a cheese that reflects the terroir of the region.

L’Artisan Mepunga Gruyere looks like it comes straight from an alpine Alpage but it tastes like the shipwreck coast, together sweet and wild. The rind is washed for two months, imparting a savouriness which gives way to a sweet and nutty finish. An excellent cheese to cook with, grate over a gratin for an intense golden cheese crust or slice onto bread for a decadent grilled cheese sandwich.
